Der chemische Vorgang der Pyrolyse ist den Menschen seit der Steinzeit bekannt. Man versteht darunter die thermo-chemische Spaltung organischer Verbindungen durch hohe Temperaturen ohne Zugabe von Sauerstoff. Mit Hilfe von Pyrolyse lässt sich beispielsweise Teer aus Holz gewinnen. Bei sehr hohen Temperaturen karbonisieren die Stoffe vollständig, das heißt, sie werden zu Kohlenstaub. Dieser Vorgang lässt sich auch zur Selbstreinigung von Backöfen einsetzen. Die Ingenieure der Herdfabrik in Traunreut entwickeln hierfür einen Backofen, der sich auf über 500 Grad Celsius aufheizen lässt.<ref>BSH-Konzernarchiv, A05-0022, inform 03/1999, 22.
